What is Book Beginnings?

“Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.” (Source: Rose City Reader)

The Sentence:

Once upon a time, we had a love affair with fire, the President of the United States thought as the match that he’d just struck to light his pipe flared beneath his fingers.

– from Swan Song by Robert McCammon

Impressions:

The first thing to cross my mind after reading this sentence is that the world will end in fireworks and explosions. Granted, I knew Swan Song is a post-apocalyptic book at this point so it isn’t really a surprise. It did, however, serve as a delightful realization that this book is not one of those ones that starts many years after nuclear fallout; rather, it begins on the cusp of the end of the world which is a pleasant surprise.
